Cracking rugby talent in SA at the moment

For all the faults of the national team at the moment, there is some incredible young rugby talent in South Africa which has to set us up very nicely in the coming years.
This weekends games proved it with some cracking performances from the Sharks, the Lions, Western Province and the Bulls.
I have no idea how [...]

Bizarre rugby selections

What is it with our infatuation to make players into something they are not?!
Jean DeVilliers is one of the best centres in the world and when he is playing alongside Jaque Fourie (Probably THE best in the world) you have a potentially awesome combination. And yet we would rather play De Villiers on the wing [...]

Gotta love the soccer!

I laughed today when I heard that the Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan announced that he was withdrawing the Nigerian football team from international soccer for the next two years while they try and rebuild their soccer structures.
It is probably not the right decision for the good of the sport but good for him for at [...]

Supporters make the franchise!

I wrote it last weekend that the Lions have no pride. I have just watched them get drubbed 59-10 by the Cheetahs and I re-affirm that view.
But I think there is something more to it. I don’t think that the administrators (and that includes coach Dick Muir) have any interest in putting the supporters first.
… [...]

And Twitter goes wild…

… with the news that Bafana Bafana is being incentivised with R1m for every goal they score in the 2010 World Cup.
One of the comments I picked up:
Giving “buffoona buffoona” R1mil per goal is same as paying me a R1000 BONUS everytime I wake a patient from anaesthetic! It’s their job!
Hilarious!
So what’s the opinion? SAFA [...]

Race to Q-School help prepare Golfers

The economics of professional golf are very harsh. Almost every player without major tour status will need to be subsidized to continue chasing the dream!
A first in South Africa! So you want to make a career playing golf, but you don’t know where to start. IGTGolf Mini Tour is designed to help aspiring golfers, like [...]

Good SA rugby on Saturday… for some! ;-)

There were important wins for both the Stormers and the Cheetahs yesterday as they put in credible performances against the Highlanders and the Hurricanes respectively.
I’m a Stormers fan so I am probably going to gush too much if I start with them so let’s take a look at the Cheetahs who were playing against a [...]

Fantastic rugby or Farce?

The big debate from this weekends Super 14 rugby is whether the 130+ point thriller between the Lions and the Chiefs was a fantastic display of running rugby or an absolute farce and a bad advert for the game?
The argument from the rugby purists – including Mark Keohane – is that too many points were [...]

Arb foreign signings hurt SA rugby

Earlier this week the Sharks announced they would be signing England flyhalf Andy Goode to try and assist with their flyhalf “crisis”.  The Stormers fielded some Argentinian prop and they still have Sireli sitting on the bench for a couple of minutes of game time.
I appreciate that the Sharks got dropped in the dwang when their pre-season [...]

Is football a mainstream sport in South Africa?

This is probably a bit of a facetious post but one of the discussions that came up in one of our office debates earlier in the week is whether or not football was actually a mainstream sport in South Africa.
There is no question that it is one of the more popular sports in South Africa, [...]
