For all the faults of the national team at the moment, there is some incredible young rugby talent in South Africa which has to set us up very nicely in the coming years.

This weekends games proved it with some cracking performances from the Sharks, the Lions, Western Province and the Bulls.

I have no idea how Gerhard Van den Heever is not in the Bok squad at the moment. He has got to be the best wing in the country right now.

In the Lions squad, Elton Jantjies has got to be one of the finds of the season. Cool under pressure, good runner, good kicker and good passer of the ball. His composure in the dying minutes of the game today was one of the highlights of the weekend and a contributing factor toward them beating Free State today.

In the Sharks side there is Pat Lambie who has excelled as a centre, flyhalf and fullback this year and with Mvovo on the wing, the team have got some nice options!

Interesting press release from Sasol on their future sponsorship of the Boks. Sounds like they could not reach an amicable agreement… interesting:

Sasol will conclude its lead sponsorship of Springbok rugby at the end of 2010 when the current agreement between the company and SA Rugby expires.

The six-year, R150 million lead sponsor deal with SA Rugby, was signed in November 2004 and includes the national team as well as the Springbok Sevens team, “A” team and the U-20 Springboks.

While protracted negotiations have been undertaken in a constructive manner, the two parties have been unable to confirm mutually agreeable terms, on which to renew the contract.

“We’re very proud of our association with the Springboks and had certainly hoped our significantly increased offer would have found traction with the union”, said Sasol senior group executive, Lean Strauss.

“As a business, we must take current market conditions into account, while at the same time recognising the enormous value this iconic team has brought to our brand. We believe our offer reflected this approach but respect SA Rugby’s decision to consider alternate sponsorship options”, Strauss said.

In the past six years the Springboks have delivered outstanding performances and a number of significant successes. The 2007 IRB Rugby World Cup victory in France, along with the 2009 British and Irish Lions tour success and their Tri-Nations triumph, were wonderful highlights. Sasol’s passion for the Sevens game saw the profile of the Springbok Sevens team greatly elevated and we hope this momentum will be maintained in the future.

“In the course of our association with the Springboks, we have seen the game extend across racial and cultural barriers. It has promoted nation building, united our staff around the world and has strengthened our brand both locally and abroad”, Strauss said.

“This has been a wonderful partnership and, while it’s been a tough few weeks for the Boks, we at Sasol remain their greatest fans and wish them well for the rest of the season and for the successes that lie ahead” he said.

Sasol’s contract with SA Rugby will run for another five months. Sasol will ensure the team receives the company’s full sponsorship support until the agreement concludes at the end of December 2010.

I came across this book earlier today and I thought it would make a fantastic gift for any cricket fan. The fact that it is a South African author, publisher and features a South African cricket icon makes it even better!

Rudi Koertzen is one of world cricket’s most experienced and respected umpires. In a career spanning 29 years, he has stood in 100 Test matches and 200 One Day Internationals. (To date, he is the only umpire to have stood in 200 ODIs.) The slow and deliberate way in which he raises his left arm to give a batsman out has given rise to his nickname, Slow Death, which gives this memoir its title.

The title takes the reader back to some of the most important highlights in Test, ODI and T20 matches over the past three decades, including several World Cups and Ashes series. It also covers the controversial side of international cricket, from match fixing to terrorist attacks. And Rudi gives his views on the use of technology in cricket, looking at the pros and cons of the umpire decision review system (UDRS).

You can buy the book online from retailer Loot for R167 or via Kalahari.Net by clicking here or on the book cover below:

What is it with our infatuation to make players into something they are not?!

Jean DeVilliers is one of the best centres in the world and when he is playing alongside Jaque Fourie (Probably THE best in the world) you have a potentially awesome combination. And yet we would rather play De Villiers on the wing so that we can accommodate Wynand Olivier at centre in a partnership that has yet to deliver anything?

It’s the same with Ruan Pienaar. The guy wants to play scrumhalf – and he is actually quite good at it – but we keep him as a flyhalf / fullback / wing and maybe sometimes scrumhalf cover. It’s bizarre.

John Smit – a faboulus hooker and a great captain to literally lead from the front, we insist that we must play him as a prop?

I dunno – a little bizarre and it does us no real favours…

Are you a Fantasy League fan? There is now a Tri-Nations rugby competition coming out from Ultimate Dream Teams:

With the Soccer World Cup reaching its climax, it’s time for sports fans to switch their attention to another exciting edition of Tri-Nations rugby. Will the Springboks continue their period of dominance and successfully defend their title in 2010 or have the All Blacks and Wallabies got a few new tricks up their sleeves?

Enter your selections now at www.udt.co.za/trinations

For those of you who want to get close to the action, show off your skills by selecting your Fantasy League team each week. Choose from top players such as Daniel Carter, Richie McCaw, Pierre Spies, Morne Steyn, Rocky Elsom and Quade Cooper.

The Rugby World Cup is just around the corner in 2011 and it’s all to play for as the three heavyweights battle it out for Southern Hemisphere dominance. South Africa will need to start strongly if they want to defend their title especially as they face a tricky away leg with two tough matches against the All Blacks in New Zealand followed by a showdown against the Wallabies at their Brisbane stronghold.

The Tri-Nations Fantasy League is FREE to play and kicks off on Saturday 10 July at 09:35 SA time (07:35 GMT) with South Africa taking on New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland.

Good luck!

First they had the audacity to beat the host nation and send them packing early. At the time Suarez and Diego Forlan were already being criticised for some of their diving theatrics which had seen the SA keeper sent off. (PS I maintain that the ref was right, but the dive made it look much worse than it was).

Then they pissed off the rest of Africa after they beat BaGhana BaGhana (Stupid name) – the last of the continents hopes with some a very questionable piece of unsporting behaviour from Suarez.

Anyway there is no shortage of hatred going around for Uruguay and I can see plenty of people who would love to see somebody pull out Diego Forlans girlie head-band or beat up Suarez.
